List of Hand Signals (Gestures) Every Indian Biker Should Know

2020-02-13T08:28:41+00:00Updated on 2020-02-13 2020-02-13T08:28:41+00:00 by 360Ride 1 Comment

Symbolizing fraternity of bikers in 1904 Arthur Davidson and William Harley waved at each other such etiquette shows the love, and respect they have for bikes. What started as a gesture of acknowledgment gradually, it has become a guide to fellow riders of that time. Such that in the coming years, it has shaped into rules governing the safe traveling experience, to the increasing population, and subsequently the biking community. Seeing the alarming rate of accidents, these signs become a mirror, a guide- to avoid any unforeseen events. Also, for the bikers to enjoy space and smooth ride in congested roads, these gestures (hand signals) come handy.

The strength of non-verbal communication doesn’t require proof because we humans started our habitations with signs only. Its reach is wider and conveys more than what words do.

So to say that we- Indians have reached an understanding of the signs, is well, true but we often do not use it. Which leads to a decline in the usage of signs as well. There are many reasons for this, like shying away, do not know when to use it, how to use it, and most of all don’t know it at all.

360ride feels your passion and thus connects the love for a bike to the responsible way of using it on Indian roads. Wave, not just because you know each other but also to guide for your turns and dangers, if any ahead.

List of Hand Signals (Gestures) Every Biker Should Use While Riding

Following are the Hand Singal one must follow on Indian roads

Left turn

The most basic of the signs which come intuitively to us is while taking a left turn. It is one of the most used signs on the Indian roads. With your left hand stretched out and your palm facing down, it will signal the vehicles behind that you want to take a left turn. It is a ubiquitous sign for four-wheelers too. We see this sign more often, maybe because it has evolved naturally. So to avoid accidents, use the turn signal.

Right turn

To take a right turn, you can do the opposite of the left turn sign, which is extending a right hand with the palm facing down, or you can use your left hand too. Yes, left hand for the right turn! For all the right reasons, you can also use the left-hand reason being as most people are right-handed, and they can better balance the bike while signaling. So to do this, make a fist and bent the hand halfway from the joint, making it a right angle at 90 degrees.

Stop

This sign is bold and clearly shows the intent that the driver is trying to convey something. Stopping cannot be casual in form, it needs to be formal, that’s why it needed to be apparent. It is noticeable from behind as the posture is strict, so one must know this because the driver is doing this for fellow riders as well, that is, to be alert. To use the sign, extend your arm and bent it from the elbow downwards to make a right angle facing down. This might seem familiar to you as it is opposed to taking a right turn but with a downward 90-degree angle. But the most important thing is that you do not need to make a fist but show your palm to signal for a stop sign.

Hazard in roadway

One can not deny the conditions of some roads in our country and so this sign comes handy to warn the riders behind if you see someone speeding up. While the highways are better conditioned, like from potholes, we don’t need to use much signaling on such roads. But it might happen that in a repairing phase or mishaps from heavy loads of trucks going on these highways create conditions required for signs. Using the left hand with finger pointed at the hazard will warn the others for the same. Also for the right side, stretch the right foot pointing to the bad condition of the roadway or debris ahead.

Turn signal on

There are limitations to communicate while driving. So the signs evolved out of necessity. Just like this signal. To tell the oncoming driver about his indicators being left on stretch left hand with fingers out, then open and close the palm, imitating the blinking effect just like an indicator. This is a simple yet distinct sign- to accurately convey while driving. And in case if this might happen to you then reply with a nod to show the thankyou gesture. That being said you only have 3 seconds to do this, so if in case you don’t get a nod, do not think of it is rude because a true rider does not worry about appreciation but being responsible.

Speed up

Sometimes you feel like the person behind you is in a hurry, in that case, you can politely offer him to pass by. Extending the arm in a rowing motion with the palm facing upwards, swing it for a while, enough to identify the driver behind for a pass.  A biker must keep the smooth flow of the road. Also, it is the responsibility of bikers to use hand signals, to advise the fellow rider to speed up- if you are planning to stop.

Slow down

Not always you feel like giving a pass, for, in a congested place, you just can’t let them override you. Also, some bikers unnecessarily speeding up, which sometimes feels like it may lead to accidents. So using this sign can save someone’s life. Opposite of speed up, row down the arm that is, swing backward with the palm facing down will warn the person behind you. One can not predict what might happen in a few seconds, especially on roads, so proper protective measures need to be taken, as a driver’s duty.

Follow me

In a group ride, it becomes your duty to guide the bikers behind you. Not just to ensure a smooth ride to your group but also for the others on the road. To avoid creating traffic or panic, on the roads, it is advisable to follow the protocols that will ensure safety. Group rides are usually done for certain charitable institutions or to promote the brand of bike. Putting faith in the biking community these rides give a message of strength and solidarity to the purpose. But to make it successful it becomes essential to make the ride simpler so as to make space for other vehicles on the roads. Making a hi like gesture, extending arm guiding the back riders to follow you with the palm facing forward will signal throughout the ride while making turns.

You lead

Another sign- in a group ride is to ask one of the riders to lead the rest of the ride or lead together.  As a part of the training method- of how to lead?; one can use this sign. The sign is to handle the responsibility to guide the roads or congestion ahead.  Also referred to, as, pass-me but in a group ride, its gesture changes. In this, the left arm is stretched in a downwards manner in a pointing way with the index finger. It is swung back and forth from the ground to the helmet at 45 degrees.

Single file

Like in a parade, we see how synchronized people move, we feel calm and proud of such formation.  It looks neat and peaceful.  So to indicate upcoming vehicles that your group is in a single-line the sign will help them to balance their vehicle’s momentum on the road while keeping in mind the formation. In a group ride a neat formation is much appreciated. This not only makes your ride a success but will inspire others to follow the safety procedures. Indicated by raising the arm, a little bit bent, but pointing up with an index finger is the correct way to do it.

Double file

While single-file becomes necessary for narrow roads, double-file is preferred for a large group on a wide road. In a disciplined manner, the double-line becomes a point of attraction. So if you are promoting something, follow proper safety rules that not only make your event successful but become a learning experience for others. So just like a single file, in a double file arm is raised to point both an index finger and middle finger upwards- which indicate two-digit signs making others clearly understand that the two files are coming their way.

Comfort stop

This sign is for the group rides only. As the name suggests, it indicates that the group is making a stop for rest and refreshment. So it is followed by other riders behind. Make a fist and extend downwards while swinging the arm in slow motion. You think this sign does not concern you, as you might think of not being part of a group ride. But a case may create where you can be on the other side of the road. So when seeing this sign, you can smoothly evade large gatherings in one place.

Refreshment stop

Just point your finger towards your mouth to indicate that you will stop at a nearby shop or dhaba to eat. This sign becomes useful when you plan an adventure trip with your friends. One must know this sign for proper communication while driving. In a long drive, while cruising, you feel the need to stop by. It’s not like you have seen the shop, and then indicated the sign, but this is made in advance that is in prior acknowledgment to the fellow travelers is necessary. So that they can smoothly make a stop when coming closer to the desired shop.

Pull-off

To indicate that your ride is coming to an end, or for generally stopping by, in a group ride this pull-off and stop sign is used. By extending the left arm upward and swinging it towards the right with the index finger pointing at the side of the road where vehicles may stop. It helps to avoid overriding and colliding with other vehicles on the road. Caressing about others is the sign of the true brotherhood of the biking community.

Cops ahead

It seems funny to alert someone from the police. How can such an obvious sign exist? Well, it might happen that once a while, one of your brothers needed to be aware of the police ahead. This does not necessarily mean that you are hiding something, but it also indicates that a check might happen ahead. So when you are not updated with your bike papers, this sign comes in handy. Just tap with your palm on top of the helmet, to indicate cops ahead.

Fuel

This is the real problem one can not avoid. But why use a sign for this? It is necessary to tell your other bike brothers that you need to refuel. They will thus look after the stop ahead. Signs are a better medium to express oneself. So point the finger at your tank to show your fellow mates about the need. A simple sign, it shows the language of bikers is straightforward, just like their journey.

The sign of appreciation which started as respect became:

  • convention to
  • rules to,
  • somewhat a manual to follow till today.

A true motorcyclist, passionate about riding, understands the importance and use hand gestures, on roads.

In earlier times, people distinguish between types of motorcycles to wave. They prefer to nod as a sign of acknowledgment- to the big tourers and cruisers. Although such a time has been long gone and the signs have now evolved. They are now considered important with an increasing number of accidents. In a two-wheeler ride, hand wave rules are de rigueur. These are the signs of a true biker. In every way, these signs are very proper to follow. Over the years, it has become ubiquitous among riders. In heavy traffic, when you are too busy staying alive, you forgot about the existence of signs. Mostly you feel shy to express it. Even, at times, you feel like warning others of the bad road, you are unable to do so. Either because you lack practice or have forgotten the hidden meaning of biking- that is, to honor the position you are in. Therefore, use gestures and overcome hesitation.

Let’s start with you!

Hence, at 360ride, we simplify the need for such cycle enthusiasts.  We have culminated in the article, tools required for the easy maintenance of your cycle.

Essential Tools Required For Cycle Maintenance

Degreaser

One of the persistent dirt that settles on the chain is grease. Grease is a sticky black material difficult to remove. I can relate how frustrating it can be to clean, each section of the chain with a brush, it takes a hell lot of time. Since the grease stuck in the chain and gear parts increases the weight of the cycle, it becomes mandatory to clean at some point in time. Furthermore, it also hampers the performance of the bike. A good degreaser like WD-40 is much needed. Well, you might have heard of this name, but it comes in different types and purposes. The link below for the product is advised, for fast penetration in cycle parts for better performance. It has a foamy effect for smooth cleaning.

The use of a degreaser is the first step in the cleaning process. Now with the help of the YOTINO bike chain cleaner, it becomes easy to clean the parts without getting your hands dirty. This tool kit not only comes with four different types of brushes to clean different parts like gear and pedals but also specifically made chain cleaner. Lubricant

While keeping your cycle functional, the most important thing is to use a lubricant. Remember to degrease it first and then apply the lube, as there is no point using it on the dirty chains and gears. Keep the cycle on the stand and target for each link possible. Also, to ensure it reaches in every part, move the pedals and change gears and apply accordingly. You can use either wet or dry lube it doesn’t make much of a difference. The wet lube does come out running, but the excess can be easily wiped with a cloth. It is generally advised to use it once a month.

Keeping the chain lubricated is important too, to avoid the squeaking sound and smooth ride. After removing the dirt and degreasing, wipe the excess water with the cloth and let the cycle dry. There are numerous products available as lube but it is necessary to use cycle-specific. As most of its parts are exposed to dust and rays which leads to rusting. The mentioned product, by NANOPROTECH, looks after each part from seat post to derailleur, chain and rope switching. This high-performance lubricant is reliable to use. It completely displaces the moisture, which helps in preventing corrosion.

Air pumps

One of the good things about cycle maintenance is that its needs are easily identifiable that is to mention, the parts are visible. One such part that needed attention is wheels. A well-inflated tire is necessary for a smooth ride. It’s natural to get the tires deflated after use. Also when you keep cycling unused for quite a while the temperature difference will seep out the air out of wheels. Thus, keeping an air pump is necessary for timely attention and maintenance. While these come in variants, with or without gauge and other essential features. You should buy as per the need for durability and pump pressure etc. Air pumps are must have maintenance tools. You can save time going to a mechanic shop and other emergency needs.

For a long and sturdy wheel, you should check for tires and inflate accordingly. With a deflated tire, you will have to put more force, and it will put more strain on leg muscles. There is a good list of air pumps to choose from. Click here to visit the page for a detailed list.

Tighten bolts

Remember the time when you first buy the cycle and its parts needed assembly. Like the pedals, saddle, handlebars, etc. These with due time gets loose and hence needs to be tightened. The need arises when you listen to rattling sound due to loose bolts. These are not only essential for the bolts holding gears and pedals but also for additional things added to bikes like mud gears and bottle holders in some cases. You do not want to feel embarrassed sliding the sound while riding with friends. Keeping a tab on these basic things will save you from injury. Also, the loose bolts have an effect on gear change in utilizing its full potential. It not only harms the cycle but will put you on risk too.

The fact that after every 6 months, one should retighten the nuts and bolts is not known to many. Hence, it is important to keep a safety kit that is easy to carry. Such is the WOTOW bicycle multifunction 16 in 1 toolkit. It comes with tools like a wrench, screwdriver, socket extension to be used in different parts. With this tool, you need to test and tighten the tightness of moving and connecting parts for a safer ride.

Bike stand

Much of the wear and tear of cycle parts are from the exposure to the outside environment like dirt, sunlight, rain, etc. Things you treasure be kept properly. Precautionary measures like keeping the bikes in shaded places help in avoiding the sun’s rays. There is a way to keep things in good condition as naturally as possible. The rust occurs when steel gets oxidized. So, rather than using anti-rust products like sprays later, it is advisable to keep the cycle safe from such exposure as much as possible.

Keeping things in order is another form of maintenance. This can be achieved with the right kind of bike stand, which can not only save space but from the exposure of dust too. This Wall Mount stand is a must-have to keep your cycle safe and wall stylish. This bicycle stand can be used either way horizontally or vertically to save space. It is easy to install. The stand can keep only one wheel but balances the whole cycle. There is no heavy lifting required. It is compatible with any type of bike, be it geared or gearless. Having the maximum weight lifting limit of 35kg vertically, the rack is durable. This type of stand helps in preventing theft as one can use the chain to bind it.

One should keep in mind that you cannot avoid long the necessity for these at some point in time. The possible effects of not cleaning a bike will result in breaking of chain, more force needed in pedaling, wearing off of paint, etc. Timely attention on these fronts will save you time and money. Like for example if you pay attention you will have to visit the mechanic for serious problems like that of changing a tire.

The importance of maintenance can not be emphasized more. It’s a once in a month thing. But if you are a clean freak, there is no such rule to cleanliness. While everything has an expiry date but if we can increase its date, we should do it. Cycling is a fun and enriching experience. It keeps one disciplined, looks after health needs and keeps away from heart disease. Henceforth keep your cycle neat, and the cycle will keep you fit!

2020-01-03T09:00:26+00:00Updated on 2020-01-03 2020-01-03T09:00:26+00:00 by 360Ride 2 Comments

Here we will discuss in detail not just the difference but which one is best as per your needs and goals so that you can make an informed decision in investing.

Choosing the right bicycle from numerous options is itself a daunting task. Terms like cogs, derailleurs, shifters are tough to figure out. Although information dissemination is made easy by globalization, however, too much information means no information. Nevertheless, here we help you figure out the difference.

To put it simply, a geared cycle has multiple gears. Gears that give speed and power to the bike while gearless cycle has only one gear.

Cycling as a hobby sure is trending. And why shouldn’t it be? From keeping you active, it mitigates the risk of heart diseases. Being an environmental activist it serves as the best alternative means of transport, going green, shifting from fuels, etc. or simply put you are one of those who have realized early the benefits of cycling and want to upgrade to gear one to develop an understanding that different types of bikes offer different features? Depending on your needs, we can identify the one for you. Knowing your bike is also essential if it needs any maintenance in some parts.

Rest assured, at 360ride, we help you sort out the difference between the two. Giving you expertise clarity on which one to buy from is our motto.

Non-Geared Bicycle

These are the traditional type cycles, we commonly see on Indian roads.it has only one gear. And thus rightly referred to as a single gear cycle. They come in two variants.

Free Wheel Cycle

The word free means functioning independently without being dependent on others for anything. Here wheel is free from the movement of the cog. As the cog is attached to the rear wheel through a set of bearing tools, it will move independently of the cog. So when you pedal, the cog will put forward the wheel in the same direction. But when you stop pedaling, the wheel will not stop, and you keep moving forward. Thus you will need to use brakes to slow down. To control your cadence, both rear and front brakes are present.

You get to coast/ move freely without the need to pedal constantly as the bicycle has a free rear cassette. These bikes make the downhill ride easier as you do not have to pedal. The wheel spin freely, unfixed of the pedal.

Fixed Wheel Cycle

In contrast, fixed wheel cycles have rear cassette fixed by a lockring. This allows the movement of wheels dependent on how fast or slow you pedal. In these wheels and cog are dependent on each other. As you pedal forward, the wheel moves forward and vice versa. Thus you can even go backward (from a standstill position). These bikes show off the user’s control and talent. It lets you do tricks while moving backward and forward on your control. These bikes are essentially an extension of the person riding it.

These type of bikes has no coasting. One can easily maintain good speed control with cadence. The bikes offer a great connection with nature too. As you go for a city ride, you can stop smoothly for sightseeing. Also, in traffic jams, you don’t have to bother about changing gear or speed control.

Geared Bicycle

These are relatively modern cycle with innovative cogs to cover long distances in less time. Gear bicycle is a substantial choice for a smart and updated lifestyle. The premise is that you can change between gears on how fast and slow you want to go. Another feature of these bikes is shifters that allow shifting between gears. Speed is thus decided by changing gear while pedaling, whereas in a single gear cycle, it depends only on how fast you pedal. Also, on riding different terrain roads, these are quite helpful. Like going downhill, use a high gear and for uphill use a low gear. Medium gear is suitable for city rides that are for flat roads. Thus, shifting between gear allows for a good cadence without using much force.

These cycles have two gear systems, crankset, and cogs, at the front and rear respectively. Their numbers vary from 2-36. How to interpret the gear numbers? The first gear is low, and with subsequent increase in numbers signify higher gears. The combination 2×12=24 gear means two crankset gear in the front and 12 cogs in the rear, which equals 24 gears in total. These gear systems are changed via shifters provided on handlebars. This shifter changes the chain in different sizes of cogs. So you shift the chain from one cog to another. Shift down refers to low gear while shift up means high gear. The shifters are there on both sides of the handlebar. The right shifter changes the cog or rear wheel. The left shifter is used for cranksets that are near to pedals. Smaller the cog more the speed will. It will put less pressure on your leg muscles for downhill rides. Larger cog means a lower gear ratio to make acceleration and uphill smoother.

Deferences Between Geared and Gearless Bicycle

Now, that we have understood the concept, let’s move to its difference:

  • Gear system: Gears are speed mechanisms, so both cycles have gear present in it. But gearless has only one gear while geared cycle has multiple combinations of gears ranging from 2-36.
  • Usage: Gearless cycles are relatively easy to use, while in the gear cycle, you need to learn high and low gear to ride in different terrain, and that needs to be changed accordingly.
  • Distance: Gearless are for commuting in cities or to a workplace that is, for covering a short distance while geared cycles we know are essentially the speed to cover long distances. Since you will be using only one gear, you are likely to get tired in less time, whereas geared cycle provides good cadence.
  • Maintenance: Every product depreciates, and cycles have components that rust or wear off after using for a long time. Hence maintenance is necessary for both types of cycles. However, gearless requires little maintenance, and thus it is a costless affair. On the other hand, geared cycles have high maintenance costs that can incur from changing cogs.
  • Terrain: Although gearless cycle can be used for bumpy and rough roads present in city but geared one is great for riding in rough terrain. Different gears present in this type of cycle are for different drivetrains.
  • Price: Differences in the cost of these bikes are quite evident. As gearless cost less, while geared are infused with features, thus are comparatively pricey.
  • Comfort: In the gearless cycle, you move forward by pedaling only, thus more pressure is put on leg muscles, whereas comfort level in geared cycles is balanced out by gear systems.
  • Features: Gearless are simple bike with pedals to move because it puts a strain on leg muscles and in a way strengthen them, thus favorable for exercises whereas, geared cycles come with two types of the gear system, and derailleur, which works by lifting the chain from one cog to another of different sizes.

Which One to Buy?

Everyone wants to buy the latest cycle while their preferences vary. So let’s go through your possible situations.

  1. If you are a beginner and have just developed a liking to cycling, the gearless cycle is the one for you. It gives you an edge on commuting in the city and avoiding fuel hike. Whereas if you want to change your lifestyle while creating a statement, gear bike is the one for you.
  2. If you are planning an adventure, you may encounter hilly terrain, rough surfaces. For comfort and cadence, opt for geared cycles. However, if this is in your bucket list and you are not confident yet riding it on main roads, following rules, and feeling low on experience required on the journey, try learning basics through gearless one. This is a pocket-friendly choice too.
  3. If you are in love with speed, geared cycles can fulfill your desire for a thrilling experience, whereas gearless is compatible with a safe morning exercise routine.

I hope you connected with the content and got some clarity. Welcome to the cycling community. Great ride ahead!
